Wombles news - 2003

'Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, we've got a lot of knowledge now'

November 2003

The Wombles' Guide To LifeA new book, The Wombles' Guide To Life, is released on 6 November 2003 - just in time for Christmas, making an ideal stocking-filler.

Aimed at the 'retro' adult market, the pocket-sized book takes you back to the "wonderful whimsical world of the Wombles" with an in-depth guide to each of the seven main characters, plus assorted trivia gleaned both from the books and from real life.

Anyone who loved their 70s Wombles annuals will enjoy reminiscing about their favourite moments, while recent converts will find this a useful introduction to life in the Wimbledon burrow.

Both informative and entertaining, its 160 pages are littered with illustrative quotes as well as "life lessons" from each Womble: look after others, trust your friends, know your limitations, take your time, be happy with who you are.

'Back in 1780, when Bulgaria was a lad...'

October 2003

The Wombles will be on display at Pickford's House Museum in Derby from 25 October 2003 until February 2004 - on loan from the National Museum of Film, Photography and Television in Bradford.

The museum was originally the home of local architect Joseph Pickford, who built the town house in 1770, and recreates room settings of the Georgian period as they might have looked in Pickford's time. The upper floors feature displays of toys and toy theatres.

'Things that the everyday folks leave behind'

Five of the Wombles feature in a current campaign for the disability charity Scope: The Wombles would like YOU to recycle for Scope

You can help raise funds by recycling used printer cartridges and mobile phones, or by donating bric-a-brac, books and CDs to your local Scope shop. Posters in the shop windows show Uncle Bulgaria with the slogan, 'Set your toys Wombling free'.

A set of five Wombles pin badges is on sale in Scope shops around the UK, at £1 per badge. The collection seems biased towards the older generation, with Great Uncle Bulgaria, Tobermory, Madame Cholet and even MacWomble, but only Orinoco representing the younger Wombles.
